reflexology

Although variations of reflexology have been in existence since ancient times, modern reflexology was developed by American physiotherapist Eunice Ingham in the 1930s.  Ingham identified reflex points on the feet which correspond with parts of the body.  She discovered that manipulating these points could trigger a positive healing effect in the body.

A professionally trained reflexologist can detect subtle changes or 'imbalances' in the reflex points of the feet and, by working these points, may help to restore the body’s natural equilibrium.  Tensions are eased, circulation and elimination are improved and the physical, emotional and spiritual are rebalanced.

Who can benefit from reflexology?

Almost everyone can benefit in some way from reflexology.  Aside from the relaxation, stress relief, improved energy levels and general sense of wellbeing brought about by the treatment, reflexology may also bring relief from a wide range of chronic and acute conditions.  Reflexology is suitable for all ages including babies and children.

Some complaints which may be successfully treated by Reflexology include:
  • pain
  • headaches
  • thyroid disorders
  • digestive disorders
  • hormonal imbalances
  • fertility issues
  • sleep problems
  • joint and muscle problems
  • allergies
  • stress-related conditions, anxiety and mental health issues
  • pregnancy
  • fatigue

What happens when you go for a treatment?

Your first session will include a consultation to establish your past and present health, diet and lifestyle.  This consultation is an essential part of your treatment as it allows me to find out about any health problems you may have and design a treatment plan tailor-made to address your specific needs.  The consultation will take around 15-30 minutes.  There is no charge for consultation.

A standard reflexology treatment itself last around 45-50 minutes.  It it carried out in a special reflexology chair or a treatment couch.  There is no need to remove any clothing aside from shoes and socks.

During the treatment, I will use my hands to apply gentle pressure to the feet, seeking to gently work any imbalances and restore the body's natural healthy balance.

How will you feel after a treatment?

The effects of reflexology are unique to each person.  Most people feel extremely relaxed and uplifted after a session.  Some people feel more energetic straight away, others feel drowsy at first and then energised later on - or the following day.  Most clients claim a marked improvement in their presenting conditions as well as their general health and wellbeing including energy levels, quality of sleep and stress levels, with continued improvement after subsequent sessions.

Reflexology is described as a 'complementary' or 'holistic' therapy, what does this mean?

Complementary therapies provide a gentle, safe and natural approach to health maintenance.  These therapies do not seek to replace but rather to 'complement' conventional medical practices.  Indeed, many clients often use complementary therapies alongside traditional medicine in the treatment of health conditions.

Complementary therapies are growing rapidly in the UK and across the world as people are increasingly turning to natural, alternative treatments both in the management of specific health complaints and also more generally in the commitment to their ongoing health and wellbeing.

Complementary therapies are 'holistic' in nature.  That is, they consider the 'whole' person rather than simply treating a particular symptom or condition.  Holistic therapies appreciate the complexity of the human being and work to restore the natural healthy balance of the body - addressing the physical, the emotional and the spiritual.  A holistic therapist will always consider the many and various aspects that impact on a client’s wellbeing, including health, diet and lifestyle, and tailor the treatment to the client’s specific needs.

Please note that due to Advertising Standards Authority regulations, Reflexology
Practitioners are restricted in the claims they can make for the treatment.  Practitioners
cannot diagnose or offer a 'cure'.  Nor can they claim that the treatment 'can' or 'will' benefit a client, only that it 'might'.  Regulations also prevent Practitioners advertising that Reflexology will help specific, named medical conditions, hence only general conditions are referenced above.

However, many clients claim very positive and dramatic improvements following treatment.  Please see my
Client Testimonials for a selection of comments from my current and past clients.
